“The team at True Grit and myself are so excited to get the ball rolling with putting our best foot forward towards changing and engaging in something to help our gorgeous planet.  Sustainable Salons captured my interest years ago just before Covid. Finally, we have made the commitment to recycle 95% of our rubbish and turn it into a sustainable future for our environment and community.  We are all so excited to bring this to our clients so you can also be a part of our commitment” – Jacqui Victor, Owner, True Grit.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE SALONS?

Sustainable Salons is a profit-for-purpose organisation helping solve the problem of hair dressing’s environmental footprint for over seven years in Australia and New Zealand.

How, do you ask? They collect up to 95% of a salon’s discarded resources and re-diverts it so very little goes into the council bins.

This means resources like aluminium foil (who knew it’s infinitely recyclable?!), plastic bottles, magazines, chemicals, metals, paper, and yes, even hair, will get put to a different use after they have left True Grit.

What they take out of True Grit, they put back into the Sustainable Salons circular economy to be repurposed into new and innovative products, including Recycling Grams – Australia’s first closed-loop recycled detangling comb and HiJac – Australia’s first closed-loop recycled pet leash, both of which use Sustainable Salons recycled plastic.

Sustainable Salons is also the largest donor of ponytails in the world, providing them to charities and wigmakers for those suffering from medically-induced hair loss. Learn more about Freedom Wigs NZ here.

WHAT BEING A SUSTAINABLE SALON MEANS FOR YOU

We want our clients to help us be the change we want to see in the world. So aside from seeing some cool new bins (see below!)around the salon, you’ll notice a couple of other small changes also. For being part of the Sustainable Salons network, a small $3 Green Fee will be added to your bill at the end of every service with True Grit. It may not sound like much, but small contributions pack a serious punch!

This $3 goes towards the collection and processing of our waste products, and Sustainable Salons’ partnership with KiwiHarvest. Sustainable Salons donates 100% of their recycling proceeds in New Zealand to KiwiHarvest. This partnership allows KiwiHarvest to give 2 or 3 meals with every dollar that Sustainable Salons donate.

Bins.
