Why does hair get dry? Just like anything else, if you don’t get enough moisture to it, it’ll dry out. It’s not like watering a plant though… Your hair can get dry because your scalp doesn’t make enough oil to moisturise your hair, or your hair lets moisture escape. Sometimes, hair doesn’t make enough oil, which leads to dry hair. (Likewise, roots in overdrive lead to oily and greasy hair.)
This much is true; anyone can suffer from dry hair but with the right hair care habits and products, your hair can be saved! Don’t let the dull and brittle take over… hold onto that shine!
As soon as we step out of the door we’re faced with all kinds of pollutants and harsh UV rays, but if you’re a keen swimmer or you tend to tie your hair back tightly for activities, all of these factors are affecting the luster of your locks. As we can’t avoid environmental impacts (unless we hide under a rock), it’s best to embrace all that is around you but be mindful and take extra steps for prevention and cure. The sun’s UV rays weaken the protein bonds on the hair shaft, causing hair to become brittle and more susceptible to breakages so cover up with a hat whenever you can.
Our tips for combatting dry hair
1. Don’t play with your hair!
Constantly twirling your hair around? Don’t! Touching your hair constantly draws the moisture out of the strands, meaning they’ll be far more likely to dry out and split. Once your hair has been styled for the day, you shouldn’t be touching it excessively.
2. Don’t wash (or brush) your hair too often
Your body knows how to do its thing by producing natural and essential protective oils so try not to wash every day as this can wash them out. It’s the same with brushing. Excess brushing can rough the surface and leave it looking distressed. A comb made from natural materials can be much less harsh so consider investing in some high-quality tools just as you would for any job!
3. Feeling hot hot hot
When it comes to hydration, a hot shower may calm the mind but it has your oils in overdrive! Too much exposure to hot water can be seriously drying to your hair. If you’re not into shower caps (we promise they can look cute), try a temperature leaning towards lukewarm and hold your breath to finish with a run of cold water to smooth the roughened hair surface. And remember to always ‘gently’ towel dry your hair!
4. Machine drying v’s air drying? Get protection!
We get it, time is of the essence so it’s not always possible to hang around and wait for your locks to dry naturally. It’s never a good look to hit the office with wet hair so use protection if you’re reaching for the dryer!

5. Got split ends? Here’s how to rid them once and for all!
We all get them from time to time but intense heat can damage the hair which in turn causes the ends to become brittle and split.
There’s nothing worse than seeing the first signs of split ends appearing in your hair. Split ends can make our hair look dull and damaged, and halt any hope of growing hair longer. Luckily there are a few ways to combat and prevent split ends from occurring, which will keep your hair feeling healthy and looking shiny!
Make sure you pop that protection through the strands as we constantly preach but also, keep a track of regular haircuts. It really is an important step in your hair care diary.
There’s no better way to treat split ends than by getting regular trims, and getting the split ends cut off. We recommend regular haircuts every 5-6 weeks for hair that is easily damaged or 6-8 weeks for healthier hair.
