It’s not something we normally think about, but the health of our hair is linked to the health of our scalp. Makes sense, right?

The scalp is the foundation for the hair, and the head’s first line of defense against the outside world. Just like the skin on the rest of your body, the scalp is seriously affected by an array of biological and environmental conditions. Think dirt, oil, sweat, and other pollutants, clogging up the pores on your scalp, and seriously depleting its ability to grow healthy hair.

Scalp issues include:

  • Sensitivity
  • Thinning hair or hair loss
  • Itchy
  • Dandruff
  • Oily roots.

Remember: Shampoo for scalp and Conditioner for ends

Shampoo and conditioner have different purposes and need to be applied differently. Rather than lathering all over your hair, focus your shampoo on your scalp and your conditioner on the ends.

Knowing the history of your scalp

Believe it or not, knowing the history of your hair and scalp is just as important as the rest of your physical health. When at the hair salon, make sure to have a conversation with your hair stylist during your consultation so we can give you the best colour results possible.

Scalp Health Kerastase

All information about your hair history is so important to us! This includes; previous colours whether done professionally or at-home, products you use often, other treatments you’ve had recently, or whether you’re exposed to harsh environmental elements (chlorine we’re looking at you!). The more thorough you can be with your scalp history, the more able we are to create your unique colour and process combo, which ensures we don’t let any hair nightmares happen!

FOR A dry and itchy scalp

The most common causes of a dry and flaky scalp are constant exposure to changes in temperature and weather, so don’t think you’re the only one. With extreme dryness and sensitivity comes flakiness, which can be difficult to get rid of – so we’ve made a list of things to try if you’ve found yourself with a drier and more itchy scalp than normal.

Hair and scalp

Choose gentle hair care: Harsh shampoos can be guilty of drying out your hair and stripping away all the naturally occurring oils, meaning your dry scalp will struggle to reset. Try a more gentle approach to shampooing and look out for products containing lots of good oils and less colour and fragrance.

Warm over hot: Even something as simple as the temperature of your shower can cause big changes in the condition of your scalp. If you’re suddenly experiencing a dry and itchy scalp, try using warm water when you wash instead of piping hot, and if you’re feeling extra brave, finish it off with a cool rinse to seal cuticles and freshen the body.

Sweet sweet water: When things get dry, one of the easiest ways to ensure hydration is to drink more water. Your scalp will always benefit from what you put in your body, as well as what you put on it, so ensure you’re getting plenty of water throughout the day.
