Amy Newfield, one of our courageous Salon Coordinators, has decided to put her body on the line to fight for charity this November! Read on to find out what OneStaff Fight for Christchurch is, why she has made the bold decision to participate, and how you can support Amy and Cure Kids, whilst also putting yourself in the draw for one of two luscious prize packs!
“On the 3rd of November, our local Horncastle Arena will be transformed into a glittering palace with a Las Vegas fight night feel. All for the high-profile black tie event, OneStaff Fight for Christchurch, Australasia’s biggest charity boxing event. OneStaff Fight for Christchurch supports two charities – Cure Kids Charitable Trust and Conductive Education Canterbury. The event’s aim is to raise $200,000 for these charities to directly support the programs and people who need it the most.
I chose to support Cure Kids as my charity, as I have watched a close family member struggle through the physical and emotional trauma of watching their son battle a very rare form of childhood cancer. Happily, he is now years into remission, but if it had not been for charities such as Cure Kids the outcome may not have been such a positive one.
Cure Kids was established by Rotary in 1971 as the Child Health Research Foundation. Since then, they have helped save and improve the lives of thousands of kids both here in New Zealand and around the world. They’ve invested more than $40 million in research which has helped shape and change the way children who live with serious diseases and health conditions are diagnosed and treated.
I considered entering a boxing event a few years ago, but I found I couldn’t quite bring myself to send the application in – it seemed way to scary to actually follow through with! However, this year my friend, who is helping run the event, asked me if I would be keen to get in the ring this time, as one of the contenders had pulled out, and they desperately needed another woman.
Initially the fear took over again and I declined. But later when I talked to my husband about it I decided if it’s not now, it’ll be never – and I am long overdue for a challenge.
So even though I am scared s***less, here I am! My kids think I am pretty kick-ass so that’s a bonus! The training is gruelling and unlike anything I have ever done before, but I know after all this is over I will be so proud and pleased I did it.
My goal is to raise $5,000 which will go directly to Cure Kids Canterbury Trust through my give-a-little page.
My wonderful boss Jacqui has been in full support of this and has been amazing in helping me round up some amazing vouchers, products and services from generous sponsors to go into a raffle prize that we will sell within True Grit”
