AN UPDATE FROM JACQUI // 3 MAY 2023 //
I have been spending endless hours on my couch, which I affectionately refer to as my day bed. It has been a difficult journey for me, but thankfully, ACC and my amazing friends, along with my perfect nurse Shane, have been taking great care of me. Despite this, I can’t help but feel the underlying desire to be at work, making my clients look beautiful and spending time with my awesome team. Unfortunately, I still have another month of non-weight bearing on my right leg before I can begin rehabilitation, which is a daunting thought. Although I am enjoying using my scooter, which is much easier than crutches, I feel a lack of independence since I have to rely on my friends and family to take me places. I am incredibly grateful for their support and cannot thank my gorgeous friends enough. Lately, I have been going to True Grit more often to visit my team and bump into my clients. You may see me there, sporting my fabulous orange road cone on my leg. Thank you and cheers, Jacqui 🧡
A BAD BREAK // 29 MARCH 2023
After the thought of a wonderful Saturday, riding my bike around the Peninsula with my husband Shane and my besties, before settling in at a friend’s house to watch the sail GP, it was quickly cut short after a dismount from my bike, finding myself on the ground with my right foot at a right angle to my leg it shouldn’t of been (yes, the same leg I had just recovered from my knee surgery on). Before I knew it I was surrounded by St. John’s, the fire department and police. Eleven of them in total, attending to little old me who was in a heap on the ground at Godley house. A very long and uncomfortable ride in the ambulance ending up at Christchurch Hospital ( my ever first ambulance ride)
X-rays proved a severe dislocation and three fractures so surgery was eminent. A six day wait in hospital proved to be a frustrating but pleasant and entertaining insight into the world of the public health system. Friday arrived with nil by mouth for fluids and food which meant I was on the list for surgery.
Surgeon Charung was ready for me, and within three quarters of an hour I was on the slab. After two hours of surgery, four pins / screws / cable ties, they put me back together. The next four nights were full of BPs, temperature checks, names, date of births, pills, pain relief, visitors, hopping to the bathroom with a frame, delving into hospital cuisine, more BP’s, more temperature checks, more names, more date of births, nurses, nurse aids, doctors, doctors assistants, it was a sea of constant care and activity.
Home now, facing 6-8 weeks rehab, and non weight bearing on my poor unfortunate right leg, with my husband Shane who is now in the nurses uniform and is doing a sterling job so far.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the amazing team at Christchurch public hospital. The care I received was world class.
Thank you to Lyn and the team for keeping True Grit humming. And you have my word that all my clients are under the best care from my team, we all appreciate your patience as we work through your appointments. We’ve done this before, remember, we’ve got this!
Also, thank you to my lovely friends who have visited me and for all your ongoing support.
This is me, signing off from my couch, with my leg elevated, like I’ll be for at least the next 6 weeks.
Love from Jacqs …… and remember lovelies …. We’ve got this 🥰
