This year, our founder and fearless leader Jacqui Victor marks 30 incredible years in business.

Her career began 40 years ago as a passionate apprentice, a journey that’s taken her from the salon floor to the streets of London and back home to Christchurch, where she created True Grit.

Before True Grit, there was The Front Room, Jacqui’s very first salon. In 1995, with $10,000 borrowed from a friend (and bridesmaid), she purchased the business and got married in the same year.

The Front Room was more than just a salon; it was where Jacqui’s passion for mentorship and education came to life. She poured her energy into training young stylists to become the very best they could be, nurturing a team of talented hairdressers during a vibrant time in Christchurch’s creative scene.

Jacqui’s early career highlights include travelling to Australia and the Wearable Arts Awards in Nelson. As part of a team of stylists, Jacqui made it a priority to attend fashion events across New Zealand to keep the team inspired and engaged. Competition work was especially important, as it fuelled creativity and kept the team’s skills sharp.

These formative experiences helped shape the innovative and inspiring leader we know today. Jacqui’s legacy is woven into every strand of our story, and we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate this milestone with her.
