1. style when wet
Style curls when they’re wet and use a comb to keep the pattern intact.
2. Visit your hairdresser on the regular
Go for regular trims and cuts to keep them bouncy and fresh (and ensure the right cut for your curls)!
3. cotton ➜ silk / satin
Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase to avoid friction.
4. use a diffuser
Don’t blow-dry without a diffuser to disperse the heat flow and reduce frizz.
5. plop it like it’s hot
Oh yes, this is ‘a thing’ and means drying your curls to perfection without the use of heat. Easy, quick, and gentle to your twists and turns, plopping gives you dream curls. After washing, ‘plop’ your head over a laid-out towel or tee (larger than a crop top ladies), in the centre.
Grab both ends and begin to twist the towel as you stand upright. This will compress the towel onto the top head of hair as it forms 2 sausage rolls either side of your ears. To hold it in place and absorb the excess moisture, grab two strong clips, and reap the rewards of plopping progress.
You can start the plopping with sopping wet hair so just ensure you have your ‘tools’ laid out before you hop in the shower. It’s different to the regular towel and twist method we all seem to adopt from the hair care ads and post-wash at the salon. This way allows curls to dry in their natural arrangement of beauty, removing unwanted frizz and aiding volume with fine definition. It probably takes less time to ‘do’ than it has taken to read all about it!
6. use the best product

8. try cocktailing
Use product “cocktailing” to define and hydrate curls. Just like at the bar, when more than one ingredient is mixed, you can also mix two of your styling products to achieve just the right concoction. The menu includes mixing a serum with a mousse or an oil with a gel to give style and hold without the texture of a crop packet! Alternatively, you can use a styling cream on wet hands to get the curl formation in check.
9. keep conditioned
Curls have a tendency to dry so stay hydrated and treat your hair to a weekly leave-in conditioner or hair masque. If you’re enjoying some sun (yes please), rehydrate with a quick spritz of conditioning spray.
10. sleep easy
It is as important to know how to care for your curls when you sleep as it is when you’re awake and it’s all a relevant cycle. It’s best to loosely gather the curls at the highest point onto your head and collect into a scrunchie allowing it to be easily shaken our =t by morning without bed head or extra kinks!
